Harris and Lewis and the Hebrides: Photographs and Prints

This Portfolio contains some of my recent photographs taken from, and towards, various Hebrides Islands, particularly, Eigg, Harris, Lewis and Rum.  Apart for Skye, of course, my current favourite Hebridean Island is Harris with the Island of Rum a close second. One of the reasons I like the Hebridean islands so much is that they offer such an array of different compositional perspectives, and the light can be magical in many and various ways particularly around dawn and dusk.

In contrast to Skye, Harris doesn’t have the range of iconic sites that Skye has but it doesn’t do too bad on that front with its iconic sandy beaches, such as the expansive Luskentyre beach, connected to Seilebost beach and the other lesser beaches, although no less interesting, of Horgabost, Scarista and Huisinis. There is also the wonderful Harris Hills to inspire any photographer with the best views of these from Luskentyre and Seilebost. For me as a landscape photographer what I really like about Harris is that my photography there is more about tonality and luminosity and how these factors influence my compositions. In this respect, the vast beaches and distant horizons lend themselves to very ‘clean’ and almost minimalist compositions, in contrast to Skye, say, where there are few sandy beaches of any note.

The Island of Eigg also has a spectacular beach at Laig bay which offers a stunning perspective on the Island of Eigg and the varied sand patterns in the bay offer almost endless compositional variety. The Singings Sands beach, so named because the sandy part of the beach sounds like it is singing when you walk on it, also has nice rocky outcrops which again offer a great variety of interesting compositional aspects.

The Islands of Rum and Eigg are captured on the panorama below, taken from the Sands of Morar, with the disinctive profile of the ‘sleeping warrior’ of Eigg on the left and Rum on the right. The non panoramic photographs contain pictures of the Islands of Rum, Harris and Lewis. By clicking on a thumbnail below you will see the see the full frame picture against a white background and if you click again, it will be displayed against a black background. Enjoy!
